Breaking the Jar: When Devotion Disrupts the Bottom Line

I began my daily devotions this morning in John 12, and the scene stopped me in my tracks. You probably know the familiar story: Mary takes a jar of incredibly expensive perfume and anoints the feet of Jesus. It is a moment of pure, unshielded devotion. But then comes the friction—Judas’ outrage at the "wastefulness" of the resource. To his calculating mind, that perfume represented a year’s wages that could have been "better spent."
As I sat with that text, a question began to develop in my own heart: As a Kingdom entrepreneur, do I calculate ROI on money or on love?
In business, we are taught that every resource must be optimized. We are trained to be the "Judas" in the room, the steward who ensures nothing is wasted. Yet, Mary reminds us that the most impactful moments often look like a "poor investment" on a spreadsheet. I found myself asking: How do I balance both? How do I run a disciplined, profitable company while still leaving room for the kind of "wasteful" love that honors God and changes lives?
The Problem with 100% Calculation
When we run our businesses purely on calculation, we build something efficient but sterile. A calculated business treats customers as data points and employees as human capital. It may succeed in the marketplace, but it often lacks the "fragrance" of the Kingdom.
To lead for impact, we must move beyond the transaction. Here is how we demonstrate that "Mary-like" devotion in our daily operations:
Demonstrating Love in Business Operations
· Customer Service: Resolve the ticket as fast as possible to save labor costs vs viewing the person behind the ticket as an individual and go the extra mile.
· Team Culture: Treating employees as ‘human capital or units of production vs investing in their wholeness (mental and spiritual) beyond their output.
· Pricing & Profit: Maximizing every cent the market will bear vs. creating "Generosity Margins" and intentionally leaving room to bless others.
The True ROI: The Fragrance Factor
The story concludes with a remarkable detail: "The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume." When we choose to be "inefficient" for the sake of a person’s dignity or a God-sized prompt, we create an atmosphere that everyone notices. Your clients, your team, and your community can "smell" the difference between a business that calculates and a business that loves.
Take Action: Your Kingdom Scorecard
To help balance both, I invite you to look at your business through a different lens. Use these Metrics within your quadruple bottom line (people, planet, profit, and KINGDOM)
The "Mary Margin": How many "sacrificial exceptions" did you make this month? (e.g., giving extra time to a struggling client or an unexpected gift to a teammate).
The Wholeness Score: Are the people in your sphere (team and clients) healthier and more hopeful because they work with you?
The Aroma Count: How many times did someone comment on your integrity or kindness rather than just your results?
Final Thought: Ready to Serve with Love?
Good stewardship (the calculation) is necessary to keep the doors open, but radical devotion (the love) is what changes the world. Don't be afraid to break the jar.
